Safeguarding
Safeguarding at Newark Hill Academy
At Newark Hill Academy, we are committed to protecting the health, safety and wellbeing of every child and member of staff.
Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is our highest priority. Parents and carers rightly expect that children attend school in a safe, secure and nurturing environment where they can learn, thrive and flourish. To ensure this, we have robust safeguarding, health and safety procedures in place and ask all visitors to follow our policies and expectations.
For the safety of our children, safeguarding information and key procedures, including child protection guidance and fire safety information, are displayed at the Academy entrance. All visitors are required to report to reception, where identification checks will be carried out. Entry to the Academy may be refused if appropriate identification cannot be provided.
Child-on-Child Abuse, Sexual Violence and Harassment
Our position as an Academy is clear: sexual violence, sexual harassment and harmful sexual behaviour are never acceptable, will never be tolerated, and are not an inevitable part of growing up. Schools have a responsibility to create a culture where concerns are identified early, acted upon promptly and addressed effectively.
Any form of child-on-child abuse will be taken seriously and addressed immediately. We are committed to fostering a culture of mutual respect, where all children feel safe, valued and supported. Concerns will always be listened to, investigated appropriately and acted upon.
Our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy provides further information on recognising the indicators of child-on-child abuse and harmful sexual behaviour, along with the procedures we follow in response to any concerns raised. We will always act to safeguard and support our children.
Teaching Our Pupils About Safeguarding
At Newark Hill Academy, safeguarding is woven throughout our curriculum and daily life. Through our Personal Development, PSHE, RSE, Computing and wider safeguarding curriculum, pupils learn how to recognise risks, stay safe, build healthy relationships and make informed choices.
We teach children about a range of safeguarding topics, including online safety, bullying, discrimination, healthy and respectful relationships, mental wellbeing, personal safety, consent and resilience. Pupils are encouraged to understand that all worries and concerns matter and that seeking help is a sign of strength.
Children are taught to identify trusted adults both in school and at home and are encouraged to share any worries they may have, whether these concerns relate to themselves or someone else. We want every child to know that they will be listened to, taken seriously and supported. We also ensure pupils are aware of organisations such as Childline and the NSPCC that can provide advice and support when needed.
As part of our CHILD Pledge, we strive to ensure every child is Challenged, Healthy and Happy, Inspired, a Lifelong Learner, and able to celebrate Diversity. Through this commitment, we empower pupils with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to keep themselves safe, develop resilience and thrive both now and in the future.
Our Commitment to Safeguarding
Our safeguarding practice is informed by national legislation and statutory guidance, including Keeping children safe in education 2026. This guidance makes clear that safeguarding is everyone's responsibility and that schools must adopt a child-centred approach, ensuring children receive the right help at the right time.
At Newark Hill Academy, our policies, procedures, staff training and curriculum are reviewed regularly to ensure they remain fully compliant with current safeguarding requirements and reflect best practice. By working closely with families, external agencies and the wider community, we are committed to creating a safe, inclusive and supportive environment where every child can flourish.
